UTM: Quad BL 19 :284060 4657840 (Staple additional sheets here) , orm #31-17 ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE (describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within community) The Sylvanus Holbrook House is an excellent local example of late Georgian/Federalist architecture. A two-storey, timber-frame structure, the house rests on a foundation of rock-faced granite.
Windows contain 12/12 sash set in projecting frames with pinned joints; first storey and gable windows have splayed wooden lintels. Second storey windows (south & north) have heads which are set into a moulded cornice. The facade is symmet- rical about a center entry which contains a panelled door and five-pane tran- som framed by pilasters which support a dentilled cornice and a pediment. SEE CONTINUATION SHEET HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community) This house is believed to have been the home of Sylvanus Holbrook, a member of the first board of directors of the Blackstone National Bank in 1825; although little is known of Holbrook, his involvement with the bank suggests that he may have been a merchant in addition to farming the surrounding property.
In 1855, the house was marked as the property of of the Holbrook family (D.A.Holbrook-1857 & 1870; Mrs. D.S.Holbrook-1898) . The Holbrook House possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials and workmanship as well as historical associations with Sylvanus Holbrook, a farmer and early local backer of industrial development. The Holbrook House meets criteria A and C of the NRHP. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE The frieze beneath the pediment is decorated with alternating panels containing channelling and stylized trees. Although the house has a traditior of dating from ca. 1780, most of its decorative trim appears to date from ca. 1800-1825.
