Built around 1820, the building stands on a high basement of squared granite rubble above which the first storey is built of brick laid up in common bond. The building is only one room deep, divided at the center by a central chimney. Although the south elevation is partially covered by a porch, the north elevation preserves it original symmetrical arrangement of six windows and a door at the basement and seven windows at the second storey.
SEE CONTINUATION SHEET HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community) The Ironstone Mill Housing was probably one of two tenements reported to have been built by William Arnold around 1820 when he installed power looms in the Ironstone Mill. It may be that the two tenements referred to by secondary sources consisted of two units within this single building rather than two separate structures. Immediately west of the building, on the same lot, is the cellar hole of the former Ironstone Mill.
Built in 1814-1815, rebuilt in 1832-1836 after being destroyed by fire and partially repaired after a fire of 1865, the cellar hole retains a series of water channels which extend from the earth dam of the Ironstone Reservoir, through an enclosed granite channel beneath the railroad bed of the former Southern New England Railroad, to the cellar; from the cellar, channels pass beneath the Ironstone street to empty into Forge Brook. Currently no water flows through this site.
* (Note: a date placque bearing the numeral "1771" exists on the exterior at the Ironstone Mill Housing; implying the year of construction, this date seems to have been based on the nearby Quaker Meeting House of 1770, also built of brick, but bonded differently from the Mill Housing.) The Ironstone Mill Housing possesses integrity of location, design, materials and workmanship, as well as historical associations with the early development of textile manufac- turing and the development of industrial workers' housing in Uxbridge. - This building meets criteria A, C and D of the NRHP.
