UTM: Quad Ux 19 282630 4656020 (Staple additional sheets here) Fo. #10-33 ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE (describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within community) The Kensley House is an excellent local example of Federalist architec- The house is rectangular in plan with a central chimney and rests on a foundation of hammered granite, above which walls are built of red brick Windows contain 12/12 sash at the first storey and 12/8 sash in the gables. Window surrounds are framed with rectangular lintels and sills of hammered granite.
The facade is slightly asymmetrical about a central entry which contains an original sunken panel door and five-pane transom. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community) Notable primarily for its design, the Kensley House has no known hist- orical associations. The house is not labelled on the 1855 Map of Uxbridge; however, in 1857, it was the property of J. Kensley. Subsequently, the house seems to have remained in the Kensley family, passing to Mrs. Kinslar(sic.) & S. Sherman by 1870 and to Kate Kinsley(sic.) by 1898. None of these owners are listed in local directories, although it is likely that most farmed this property.
The Kensley House possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials and workmanship and serves as a well-preserved example of the type of brick construction that became locally popular for higher quality houses during the Federalist period.
