UTM: Quad Ux 19 278750 4656330 (Staple additional sheets here) rm #21-22 ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE (describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within community) The Richardsonais a good local example of vernacular architecture of the Federalist period. The house is a two-storey timber-frame structure with a central chimney and ell (east). Set on a hammered granite foundation, the facad, is symmetrical, having at its center a Federalist style entry consisting of narrow pilasters supporting an entablature and cornice beneath which is a semi- circular transom. Painted on the transom by the current owner are the initials "J.R." and the year "1819". Much of the sash dates from the late nineteenth century, although several windows retain original 12/12 and 12/8 sash.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community) The Joseph Richardson House possesses historical significance both for its design and for its association with members of the locally prominent Richardson family. Believed to have been built in 1819, the house was orig- inally the home of Joseph Richardson, a farmer and native of Burrillville, Rhode Island. Richardson was a brother-in-law of the Hon. Bazaleel Taft and may have moved to Uxbridge to farm land owned originally by his wife's family. The farm which surrounded the Richardson House was bought by Richardson in the early nineteenth century. Prior to his death, Joseph Richardson had become one of Uxbridge's largest land holders and wealthiest citizens.
Principally a farmer, Richardson is reported to have refused public office, although he enjoyed the distinction of being the first Democrat elected to represent Uxb- ridge in the General Court. After the death of Joseph Richardson, the house passed first to his widow and then to his son, William, who lived here throughout the nineteenth century. Also a farmer, William Richardson served briefly as a selectman in 1908; unlike his father, the younger Richardson engaged only in farming and not in land speculation. The Joseph Richardson House possesses integrity of location, design, setting, work- manship and feeling, as well as historical associations with Joséph Richardson, one of Uxbridge's largest landowners during the nineteenth century. The Richardson House meets criteria B and C of the NRHP.
