The house is a 1½ storey, central-chimney cottage with an ell(east).
has windows consisting of 6/6 sash set in projecting frames which are joined ng or 6/6 sash building rests on a foundation of hammered granite and at their corners by wooden pins. The facade is symmetrical; at its center are a raised panel door and five-pane transom. Flanking the entry are four windows the heads of which butt a wide cornice decorated with channelling which is cut to give an impression of swags. At the rear of the house, although unattached, is a one-storey workshop of timber-frame construction with 12/8 sash. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community) Marked on maps of 1855 and 1857 as the property of E. Southwick and E.C.
Southwick, respectively, this house may have been the home of Elisha Southwick, a wagon maker whose annual production in 1850 was reported at 12 wagons, 2 carts and 2 sleds. By 1870, the house and blacksmith shop on the south side of Chockalog Road belonged to David L. Southwick, a farmer, who owned the property during the remainder of the nineteenth century. In its present form, the house preserves both the sett ing and design of its original period of construction. The Elisha Southwick House possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, workmanship and feeling, as well as historical associations with Elisha Southwick, a wagon maker. The house preserves its central chimney timber-frame design and also several Federalist decorative details. The Elisha Southwick House meets criteria C of the NRHP.
