HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community) The Southwick House possesses historical associations with Israel M. Southwick, a local manufacturer and master mechanic.

Southwick's earliest known manufacturing venture began in 1853, when he and his brother-in-law, Richard Sayles, rented the newly built Central Woolen Mill (Form #46-D) from Moses Taft. Together, the two manufactured "fancy cassimeres" until 1859 or 1861 when they sold their lease and business to Bradford, Taft & Co. After became the new firms agent and superintendant. During the Civil War, the two managed the Central Mill on a schedule which required an around-the-clock eontra ofgr rg eresails men aepeitra n cand trece ao schedule to meet the demand of government contracts for cloth for uniforms. Ir 1866, Southwick again entered a partnership with Sayles, for the purchase of the Rivulet Mill (Form #56-A), although Southwick sold his interest in this venture to Zadock Taft around 1872. Southwick's subsequent business dealings are not known.

The Israel Southwick House possesses integrity of location, design, setting and workmanship, as well as historical associations with Israel Southwick, a local wool man- ufacturer. In addition to its historical associations, the Southwick House is one of Uxbridge's most full developed and well-preserved examples of Italianate architecture. The Southwick House meets criteria A, B and C of the NRHP.
