278170 4656650 (Staple additional sheets here) Form #22-1 ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE (describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within community) The Thomson House and Barn preserve good examples of timber-frame construction and mid-Victorian decorative details. The house is a one-storey timber-frame cottage with a central chimney. The building sits on a rock- faced granite foundation and has mostly 2/2 sash in Victorian window frames. The facade (south) is symmetrical about an added Victorian style entry(ca.1870- 80).

West of the house is a large barn, built during the 1880's; it rests on a foundation of rock-faced granite and has a variety of decorative details including hoods with scalloped bargeboards over entries, bracketed cornices, window caps on brackets and a cupola, all of which remain in unaltered conditio HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community) Although one source cites this house as the home of Solomon Wood in the early nineteenth century, the house and barn are more prominently associated with Comfort R. Thomson who owned the property throughout the mid and late nineteenth century. A farmer and breeder of livestock, Thomson had the present barn built during the 1880's and used it to raise "show team oxen". Earlier in the nineteenth century(ca.

1839), part of this property was mined.for silver ore; however, this venture was quickly abandoned due to the low concent- ration of silver in the ore and the high expense of keeping the mining shaft from flooding. The Thomson House and Barn possess integrity of location, design, setting, workmanship and feeling, as well as historical associations wtih the agrarian development of Uxbridge both for the vernacular design of the farmhouse and for the lavish and well-preserved Victorian design of the property's barn. The Thomson House and Barn meet criteria C and D of the NRHP.
