Whipple House serves as an excellent local example of Federalist architecture. Built of red brick, the house consists of a two-storey front section with twin interior chimneys and a hip root and a one-storey rear ell. The house rests on a foundation of hammered granite and has a continuous moulded cornice with modillions at the second storey. Windows contain 6/6 sash set in frames with splayed lintels and rectangular sills of hammered granite.
Elevations are laid up in common bond except the facade (north) which is laid up in Flemish bond. The facade is symmetrical about an elliptical entry arch which has been re-built to contain two doors. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community) The Whipple House is significant primarily for its Federalist design. The house belonged to A. Whipple in 1855 and to G. W. Rawson, a local farmer, in 1857. In 1870, the house was owned by T. McGlaughlin & D. Sheeren (sic.); blbe Pae ouned y . ty by 1898, this house, together with several neighboring farms, was owned by the heirs of J. C. Whitin. One local history refers to this building as the "Halfway House" and reports that it was once a stage coach stop. No other sources confirm or refute this tradition.
The Whipple House possesses integrity of location, design, setting and workmanship, as well as historical associations with the popular adoption of brick construction for high-quality houses in Uxbridge during the Federalist period. Characteristic of such buildings, the Whipple House possessesflemish bonding, splayed granite lintels and a cornice with Modillions, elements found only on high-quality buildings of the period. The Whipple House meets criteria C of the NRHP.
