The Malvern Road School was built in 1896 and occupied in January of 1897. It faced to the northwest, overlooking Southbridge Street at the corner of Malvern Road. As with many other schools of the late 19th century it was designed to be built in two stages.
The west two-thirds of the two story building were completed first, making it a four room school house. The east end was added in 1907 completing a symmetrical Beaux Arts scheme. The brick school is character- istic of structures of the American Renaissance period, incorporating such details as a full entablature at the cornice, Palladian window in the central entrance bay, and a classical porch consisting of Ionic order columns and entablature. The roof and porch cornice are wooden while the water table and belt course are marble. The Malvern Road School of 1896-1907 possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials and workmanship.
As a civic building constructed to serve a developing South Worcester neighborhood it reflects Worcester's tremendous growth during the late 19th and early 20th centuries as well as its commitment to meet the educational needs of its populace. Additionally, the school is a well preserved local example of the Renaissance Revival style designed by the prominent local firm of Fuller & Delano. Thus, the Malvern Road School meets Criteria A & C of the National Register of Historic Places. As Worcester's population expanded in the late 19th century so did its school system. By the 1890s there was an extensive building program going on. In 1897 alone six new school buildings were occupied and in 1898 three more buildings were under construction.
Most were of exceptionally high architectural quality, reflecting both Worcester's wealth and status as the county seat as well as its relatively large pool of competent local architects. The area around Malvern School was not extensively developed in 1896. To the east was Holy Cross College, to the west and north were open land and Hope and St. John's cemeteries. House lots had been laid out on streets surrounding Holy Cross and on streets southwest of the school but development of these lots was sparse. The school itself sat at the edge of an undeveloped 60 acre plot. The area today is mixed industrial and residential. ARCH. SIGN. (CON'T) - School was one of six new school buildings occupied in 1897, the styles of which varied but most of which remained within a classical idiom. The architec- tural integrity of the structure is high.
