Setting_On a hill overlooking an old road; faces south, with fieldstone retaining wall at street 19/326790/4710360 (Staple additional sheets here) ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE (describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within community) This is a fine example of the Georgian-Federal vernacular house type in Reading. It has particularly generous proportions and a fine doorway sur- round, which features pilasters with entasis on pedestals; small, parti- cularly fine molded capitals; and a tall Doric entablature. The deep sill and especially well-defined cornice molding make this one of the more elegant versions of the form. Windows are small, but placed lower than was customary; they are asymmetrically arranged on the side facade. An earlier extension, in the place of the present one, appears on the 1854 map.

HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community) Joseph Bancroft built this house on the part of his father's large estate that he had inherited. (His brother received the part that lay diagonally across Lowell Street.) The house does not appear on the 1830 map, but since Bancroît married in 1833, it is thought that he would have built at about this time. The combined Bancroft estate covered a good portion of the Reading Highlands until comparatively recent times. BIBLIOGRAPHY and/or REFERENCES 1830 map no 1854 map J.
