Constructed c. 1850, it is sheathed with clapboards and decorated with corner pilasters, shaped window lintels and bracketed door hoods. The main entry.contains an original door with paired, glazed arches. The main house rests on a granite foundation and a large two story rear ell is constructed on a brick foundation.. The house is unusual in its high degree of preservatior but not in its design. It stands on a corner' lot in a dense nineteenth century residential setting.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community) The Padilla Beard House possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials and workman- ship as well as important associations with the early development of Stoneham's transportation system. It meets criterion A of the National Register of Historic Places. Padilla Beard was the first coach driver for the line which connected Reading and Boston. This stage line began in 1833 and was replaced in 1859 with à horse car line. Beard kept his horses in the rear of this residence in what is now 26 Wright Street. After the arrival of the railroad in 1861, Beard became a conductor. His grandson W.
Padilla Gray, ä Stoneham resident, compiled a series of articles in 1939 on the role of his grandfather in Stoneham's early transportation industries.
