Date 4/82 UTM: 19/326840/4709620 (Staple additional sheets here) ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE (describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within community) Theseven bays of this long, rectangular structure are articulated by paneled pilasters. Jutting out from the upper portion of each pilaster is a chamfered knee brace that helps support the deeply overhanging roof, which creates a sheltered waiting area. Ihree door- ways lead to the baggage and waiting areas. A large bay-window composition enhances the track facade; it features five long windows above recessed panels. The upper sash of all of the long windows consist of a single large light edged by smaller, colored-glass lights. The bay window was introduced in 1891; it is likely that the upper window sash date from the same remodeling.
Decorative trim around the roof has been removed. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community) Prior to the arrival of the railroad in 1845, the town of Reading was primarily agricultural. Although manufacturing had been developing, the advent of the railroad hastened progress. In 1871 the necktie factory of Damon, Temple and Co. were sending goods to Boston on the railroad twice a day. About the same time railroad commuting to Boston was flourishing. In 1884, house lots in the vicinity of the railroad (Reading Highlands) were in great demand. The railroad depot housed the telegraph station in 1883. Excursion trains were popular in the 1880's noteworthy enough to be recorded in the local newspaper.
Reading people flocked to the depot for the Sixth Annual excursion and picnic of the traders of Reading on July 31, 1883. The railroad influenced the pattern of Reading's changes from agricultural, to industrial to conmuter. The present depot is the only remaining building associated with the railroad's heritage in Reading still intact and on the original site.
