Setting on flat corner lot facing north 19/326990/4709890 (Staple additional sheets here) ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE (describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within community) This house is one.of Reading's more complex houses. It is mostly Queen Anne in style, but shows the influence of the newer Shingle Style, with its flowing massing and smooth skin. This house has considerable sophistication, seen in the play of the wall plane. This is pierced by three oculi in one gable; it makes room for. the tall ornamented chimney between two gables, and steps back for: a deep porch. The diamond-pane windows and rubblestone foundation recall Tudor or Medieval American imagery. The gable fields display stick-style embellishment.

HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community) Fred Sperry, who lived here in 1911, was a merchant. He sold furniture, carpets and rugs in his Boston shop, to which he commuted on the Boston and Maine railroad. The neighborhood, while not homogeneous, was home to many well-to-do professionals and businessmen. The street served as a distinguished point of entry into the town fxom the west. The house was built by Dr. Mahlon Brande, an active investor in local real estate. See form no. C-233x.
