Brown Cottage is a well preserved mid-nineteenth century workers' house with more stylish pretensions than most others of its modest scale. Constructed ca. 1840, it faces a two bay gable end to the street, It is covered in clapboards with cornerboards treated as pilasters, wide tascia boards, and a raking cornice with gable end returns. Windows are simply framed and contain 2/2 sash. The entry, which is handled with unexpected elaboration, is framed by full-length side lights and a full entablature.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community) The C.H. Brown Cottage possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, and workmanship. It is significant as a well preserved and unusually well detailed example of a modest shoe worker's house. Possessing associations with Stoneham's maior theme and period, it meets criterion A of the National Register of Historic Places. This house was owned at mid-century by C.H. Brown, a partner in the Tidd tannery, who resided in an elaborate mansion at the corner of Chestnut and Maple Streets.
