UTM: 19/327840/4712830 (Staple additional sheets here) ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE (describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within community) This very early house displays several of the hallmarks of first period building: the compact shape, 5 bays in length, with .central chimney and salt box extension. Window surrounds are original at front facade; windows are high-placed, and longer than usual for early building. The door surround may have been altered when a 19th or early 20th-century door hood was removed. Placed on a hill, facing south, it is sturdy, simple, and a fine example of Reading's earliest structures. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community) This is surely one of the oldest houses in town.
Its site represents a settlement made on a direct road from the earlier settlement at present Wakefield. Situated between a swamp to the south, and a watershed and brook to the north, it was farmed for generations by Hartshorns. The Pratt family who owned the place from 1751-1799 was the forerunner of Pratt dominance of this Bear Meadow area. It was known in the 19th century as "Pratt Row." James Weston owned it in 1799-1824. He was a shoemaker, farmer, and diarist. His little book was a valuable primary source for local history and folkways. BIBLIOGRAPHY and/or REFERENCES 1765 map D.
