Date6/82 UTM: 19/326800/4709830 (Staple additional sheets here) ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE (describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within community) This much-remodeled house began as a Federal, five-bay, ridge-paralle1 oh ost o o egan ae a dwelling, with two interior end chimneys. It was given an Italianate 1ook when the carved window surrounds, columned and bracketed veranda, and round-arched attic windows were installed. Added later was the central gable and oriel in the Queen Anne style. In 1871, a rear ex- tension was built.
The doorway surround is now so plain that it would seem to be a 20th-century simplification of an earlier treatment. f ( HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community) Daniel Chute, for whom Chute Street was named, bought part of the old Parker-Jaquith farm and built a Federal house. He was one of the first shoe manufacturers in Reading, and he also owned a good portion of land along what is now Woburn Street. At that time, Woburn Street did not continue east past Washington Street; the town accepted the segment be- tween Washington Street and the Common in 1849. Chute built a small structure near his house which served in 1809 as a short-lived academy for girls, run by the Eaton sisters, founders of the New England Moral Reform Society.
It was organized to promote moral purity and to pro- tect women. Ie pronotedheldepoteavedoohaenthenretcennakehr use in coal mines. His ideas were premature, but when realized, they changed the lifestyle of Reading. The Chutes adopted Nancy Sanborn, daughter of Reverend Peter Sanborn and niece of Mrs. Chute. Nancy was the heir to the property, and after her marriage to Samuel Carter it became known as the Carter property. Samuel Carter was in the express business, sending first goods, then mail and stage coaches, to Boston. He owned a nearby steam lumber mill as well.
