Constructed c. 1864, its entry is contained in a three bay facade which faces south on Winthrop Street. The house is sheathed in clapboards with corner pilasters, a frieze, and a raking cornice. It rests on a granite foundation and is enclosed by a pitched roof with roof dormers which may be original. The windows have simple frames with slightly projecting caps and contain 2/2 sash.
The entry has bracketed hood and is approached by three granite steps. In addition to these features, the house preserves its granite curb and posts and a stable with cupola to the rear. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the conmunity) The Samue1 Chamberlain House possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials and workmanship and is significant as an excellent local example of the Italianate style associated with a known manufacturer and inventor. It meets criteria B and C of the National Register of Historic Places. This unpretentious building with handsome stables was the home of S.W. Chamberlain in 1874. An Association of Boston in that year and continued to develop other improvements to it. At one time, according to W.B. Stevens, he controlled 22 patents.
He manufactured shoe machinery such as The Hill Scouring and Buffing Machine. BIBIIUGRAPHY and/or REFERENCES W.
