The Bernard Cogan House is a well detailed local example of the Queen Anne style, similar in execution and quality to the Newton Lamson House (#328). Constructed ca. 1885, it is a rectangular plan house with a rear cross-gable. Stylistic features include decorative shingles in the gables, a vertical board valance beneath the eaves, and a front/side porch with turned balusters and a decorative rail. Windows generally contain 1/1 or 2/2 sash; the entry is framed by 3/4 sidelights.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community.) The Bernard Cogan House possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials and workmanship. It is significant as one of only a few well detailed examples of the Queen Anne/Stick Style in Stoneham and for its associations with the shoe industry. As an example of the type of house built by shoemakers as they rose on the social ladder, it meets criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places. Bernard Cogan was the son of Patrick Cogan, owner of the Patrick Cogan and Son shoe factory. P. Cogan & Son, founded in 1876, was one of three major shoe establishments to carry on into the 20th century.
Bernard, a partner in the business with his brother, James (see #94), builtethis well detailed Queen Anne house near the family factory on Main Street.
