The James Cogan House is a good local example of the Queen Anne style. Constructed ca. 1890, it retains a traditional rectangular core which is updated and disguised by various embellishments. This include cross gables supported on heavy foliate brackets, a corner tower with conical roof, and a broad front verandah which wraps around the tower. The entry is contained beneath the verandah in one of the cross gables and is framed by etched glass sidelights. Windows have simple frames and contain 1/1 sash.
The Queen Anne style of this house is well executed, and the house was carefully sited on the corner lot. The James Cogan House was built at a time and in a style common to the suburban expansion of Stoneham, and this house is similar to houses of High and Chestnut Streets both architecturally and economically. It is important because it is so well preserved and because it is associated with an important local shoe manufacturer. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community.) The James Cogan House possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials and It is significant as a good local example of the Queen Anne style and for its associations with the shoe industry.
As an example of the type of house built by shoe manufacturers as they rose on the social ladder, it meets criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places. This residence was home of shoe manufacturer James Cogan, son of Patrick Cogan, local shoe manufacturer. With his brother Bernard, the two carried on the family firm of Patrick Cogan and Son. P. Cogan and Son, founded in 1876, was one of the three major shoe establishments to carry on into the 20th century. The original family home was located a block away on Tremont Street, an area of Irish shoemakers. Bernard Cogan lived on Flint Street (#344). (See form #122.)
