Description of the property

Located across the street from the town common in the commercial and civic center of Marlborough, the John Cotting House occupies approximately 4 acre of land and is set back twenty-two feet from Main Street. The lot on which it stands is unelevated, however the house is surrounded by grass and shrubs on all sides and has a wrought The Cotting House Typically Greek Revival in design, the main blockof the house is a three bay sidehall plan building that displays a temple front witha pedimented portico. Rising from a stone foundation, the structure is sheathed in clapboards and enclosed by a pitch roof that rests on a wide, simple entablature. Windows throughout the building contain 2/2sash and are capped by molded pediments. The building's symmetrical three bay gable ended facade (north elevation) is sheathed in horizontal matched boarding and is framed by simple wide cornerboards.

This ele- vation features a pedimented portico composed of four,two-story Doric columns which support a plain entablature that continues around the entire structure. The gable, which is covered in clapboards, has one window at its center and serves as a high pediment for the building's temple front. The structure's main entrance is located at the northwest end of this elevation. The doorway is framed by 3/4 length sidelights and a raised panel that is placed below them. The entry is capped by a wide architrave and a pediment similar in design to the ones above the building's windows. The east and west elevations form the sides of the structure and are identical in design. Each face is framed bywide cornerboards and contains four symmetrically aligned window openings.

On the west elevation, however, the two northernmost windows have been blocked in to accommodate a stairway located on the interior of this wall. ate d statmvay tocated on tne Attached to the rear of the building (south elevaton) is a two story clapboarded ell with a pitch roof. Standing at a considerably lower height than the main section of the house, this addition contains irregularly placed windows and has a pedimented entry supported by brackets on the east elevation. The interior of the house has remained largely unaltered since its construction. Its particularly noteworthy features include a tin ceiling in the front-hallway and windows with pedimented moldings that repeat the design of those on the building's exterior.

Statement of significance

Architect Not Known Statement of Significance (in one paragraph) religion science sculpture social/ humanitarian theater transportation other (specify) The John Cotting House possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials and workmanship. It is significant as an intact and well preserved example of a finely detailed temple front Greek Revival style residence and is important for its association with a family prominent in the community's development during the 19th century. The building thus meetsCriteria A, B, and C for listing in the National Register of Historic Consiructed in 1851 for John F. Cotting, the Cotting House is located on the Boston Post Road, a major Colonial Period highway, in the east village of Marlborough.

This area of town, oriented around Main (Boston Post Road) and Maple Streets, emerged as a commercial and divic hub in the 18th century and continues today to serve as the town center. Members of the Cotting Family were community leaders in civic and commercial activities throughout the 19th century. The first of the family to arrive in Marlborough was Amos Cotting. Trained as a doctor, he moved to the community from Waltham in 1799. Shortly after his arrival, the town entered a period of economic growth based on the manufacturing of shoes and straw. This early period of industrial development encouraged commercial activity particularly at the already established commercial and civic center located on the Boston Post Road (Main Street) at the intersection of Maple Street. It was in this prospering business district that Amos Cotting's son, John B.

(1799- 1870), first operated a store and later built a tavern in 1822 at the corner of Main and Cotting Streets, just east of the nominated property. The structure served as an inn, community meeting place, and social center throughout the l9th century, ana stood as a prominent local landmark until demolished in 1948. Much note of the important role the buil ding playedin community life can be seen in Ella Bigelow's local history of 1910 - Historical Reminiscences of Marlborough - in which the social activity that John B. Cotting's son, John F., constructed the nominated property în 1851. Involved primarily in business with his father, John operated the family store, but is best for the role he played in the civic affairs of the community. During his lifetime he served as a selectman and postmaster for the town.

The house continued to be owned by the Cotting family until the turn of the 20th century. In addition to its association with a prosperous family who were leaders in the commercial, civic, and social affairs of 19th century Marlborough, the building is also an architecturally significant structure representing a well designed Greek Revival style residence. The house is one of a handful of temple front buildings 9.
