Constructed c. 1865, it is a side hall cottage with rear and side wings.. Typical features incluse a bracketed cornice and segmentally arched dormers with scrolled enframements. A later (c. 1900) feature which complements the original fabric, ts an open porch with corner gazebo which is supported on Tuscan columns.
The entry is framed by leaded stained glass side lights, also a later addition. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community) The George Cowdrey House possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, and workmanship. It is significant as a good local example of a Second Empire Cottage and as the home of a local shoe manufacturer. As a well preserved and typical representative of Stoneham's residential development during its greatest period of prospérity, the Cowdrey House meets criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places. The builder of this: Mansard roofed residence took full advantage of the slope of Farm Hill; the views to the west are extraordinary.
It appears that although this is a small residence, the builder took care to finely detail all aspects of the design. George Cowdrey, the first owner, was born in Stoneham and engaged in shoe manufacturing. He was active in town business and also in the State Legislature. Cowdrey Street is named after him; his land holdings included other lots abutting it. Hill Street had few houses along the northern end until the 1880's. The Cowdrey House is the finest early residence, beginning a tradition which resulted in several architecturally conscious houses in the immediate area.
