Boston North Quad 1:25000 UTM: 19/328120/4705960 (Staple additional sheets here) ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE (Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community.) The Blake Daniels Cottage is one of Stoneham's best preserved Greek Revival residences, closely associated with the shoe industry. Constructed ca.1860, it has a sidehall plan with a large side ell, which may be of an earlier date. rests on a granite foundation, is covered with clapboards and is enclosed by a pitched roof with shed roof dormers.
The main entry is framed by full-length sidelights, pilasters and a full entablature. Windows have simple surrounds and contain 6/6 sash. The cottage is set well back from Elm Street on a slight rise and facesnorth. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community.) The Blake Daniels Cottage possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, and workmanship.. It is significant as a well preserved example of a Greek Revival cottage and for its close associations with the shoe industry. Thus, it meets criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places. Blake Daniels had a small last factory, possibly occupying a portion of this house in the 1870s. The site, at the corner of Elm and Dunklee Streets, is well preserved, as is the house.
The house appears to have possibly an earlier wing with a central chimney, and 6/6 sash. The Daniels House is a good example of the kind of home industry which flourished in the home-manufacture phase of shoemaking, prior to the introduction of machinery and subsequent factories. The manufacture of lasts or other components was carried out throughout the town, in addition to the cutting and stitching of shoes.
