Constructed c. 1840, 1t retains the traditional, five bay, center entry form of earlier houses, but is updated by the stytish motits of lts porch which includes four Tuscan columns carrying a wide, bracketted frieze. founded on granite. Windows contain 6/6 sash and the entry has full- length sidelights.
The main alteration to the house is the application of aluminum siding and storm windows. The house faces west on Pine Street in a mid to late nineteenth century residential setting. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community) The Silas Dean House possesses - integrity of location, design and setting and is significant primarily for its associations with Silas Dean, one of Stoneham's most prominent nineteenth century citizens. It meets criterion B of the National Register of Historic Places. Silas Dean (born in 1815), had a long career as town clerk, historian, auctioneer, justice of the peace, educator, and merchant. His History of Stoneham was published in 1870, and formed a nucleus for the later (and last) history of the town written by Stevens in 1891.
In 1842-43 he maintained a private school in this house, and maintained his Town Clerk office, which he held for over forty years, in a rear room of the house. There are a number of Greek Revival cottages with full porches of this type in Stoneham and they are noted in this survey. While this one retains most of its original features, it has unfortunately been altered by aluminum siding. BIBLIUGRAPHY and/or REFERENCES 1874 map of Stoneham W.
