Date May 1, 1979 Assessor's Map #13-80 Boston North Quad UTM: 19/327860/4704800 (Staple additional sheets here) ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE (describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within community) The E.A Durgin House is one of Stoneham's few Second Empire style residences to retain its original form, teatures and setting intact.-Constructed ca. 1870, it is a large cottage of irregular plan formed of a side-hall core with north side wing and rear-end ell. Its most prominent feature is a steeply pitched roof tower which rises above the entry. common elements include open porches, bracketed cornice, pedimented dormers and 2/2 sash. The only obvious alteration to the house is its asphalt roof.
The house faces west on a relatively large triangular lot formed by the intersection of. Summer and Pleasant Streets. It preserves its original granite curbing, posts, and steps, as wel1 as a barh with cupola at the rear end of the lot. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community) TheE.A. Durgin House possessesintegrity of location, design, setting, materials, and workmanship. It is significant as a good local example of a Second Empire cottage, and as 1, it is signi ficant as a god the home of a local shoe dealer. As a well preserved and typical representative of Stoneham's residential development during its greatest period of nrosperity, the Durgin House meets criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places. Durgin was a "dealer in boots, shoes and rubbers; repairing neatly done at short notice" - as an advertisement of 1895 promised. This house is among. the most architecturally fanciful in Stoneham, and is distinguished by its central tower with shingled gable. Mr. Durgin began his shoe business in 1883 in a shop on Main Street. This house was later the residence of J. Fassenden, an upholsterer.
