It was built on a slight rise to take advantage of the views down the hill. It displays a cross-gable form, with two side porches and two bay windows, one on each gable end. Large, paired brackets sit beneath the main eaves, while single brackets "support" the roofs of the bay windows. The porches rest upon chamfered posts on pedestals, and feature incised scrolls and a bracketed and denticulate cornice.

Above the eastern bay window, at second-floor level, is an especially nice window arrangement: two tall, narrow, round-headed win- dows are framed by pilasters supporting a pediment open at the bottom and containing an applied decoration inside. Single round-headed windows light the attic. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community) W. F. Durgin was educated at Atkinson and Middleboro Academies, taught school, and was employed as agent by a manufacturing company on Martha's Vineyard. He was editor of the "Advertiser," came to Reading in 1867, and built this house in 1873. He formed part of a wave of businessmen who settled in Reading, but worked in Boston, commuting on the railroad. After Durgin's death in1887, the house was sold to William B.

Livermore, whose wife was daughter of Horace Cummings. In 1910 the owners were assessed for an "auto house." BIBLIOGRAPHY and/or REFERENCES 1875 map W. F. Durgin (William) 1889 map W. B..
