Commercial district on Boston North Quad 1:25,000 UTM: 19/327290/4705300 (Strple additional sheets here) ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE (describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within conmunity) The Amasa Farrier Boarding House is a large simple structure of traditional form, exhibiting Italianate motifs. It was constructed on Main Street c. 1865 to house workers at the nearby developing factories. It is the only remaining intact example of a period boarding house. This two story structure faces gable end to the street, but retains a center entry in the tive bay side elevation (north). A secondary entry in the large rear ell faces the street.
Ornamentation of this vernacular structure is confined to wide cornerboards, a bracketed raking cornice and a bracketed front porch. Windows are simply framed and contain 2/2 or 6/6 sash. A granite retaining wall separates the house from Main Street. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community) The Amasa Farrier Boarding House possesses integrity of location, design, materials and workman- ship and is significant as Stoneham's best remaining example of a boarding house. As such, it is an important reflection of the way some of Stoneham's workers -lived during the town's industrial heyday. It meets criteria A and C of the Nationäl Register of Historic Places. This structure was used as a boarding house (or multiple family house) for shoe-factory employees.
Several additions may have been made. The owner of.the property until 1883 was Amasa Farrier, town surveyor and planner of Stoneham and Lindenrood Cemeteries.
