Constructed c. 1865, this two story house has an L-shaped plan with a one story porch at the angle. It is sheathed by clapboards with wide cornerboards and enclosed by a nearly flat, overhanging roof with paired brackets. It rests on a brick foundation. Windows have heavy projecting caps and contain. original 6/6 sash.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community) Ine Amasa rarrier House possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials and workman- ship. It is significant as a good local example of the Italianate style and for its associations with Amasa Farrier, Stoneham's nineteenth century surveyor. The .house meets criteria B and C of the National Register of Historic Places. Amasa Farrier (1803-1883) helped to create Stoneham's physical form as its principal surveyor and landscape designer. He came to Stoneham in 1838 and was engaged in surveying and held a number of town offices. In addition to subdividing land for homebuilding, he was the designer Of the Stoneham Cemetery (1844) and the Lindenwood Cemetery.
(1862) - His designs for the cemeteries show a familiarity with the work of John Claudius Loudon, English landscape gardener. The family home on Central Street has a picturesquely planned landscape design flanking the side of the Italianate house. His education and the sources for his work in Stoneham are worthy of further research, as his garden and cemetery plans reveal knowledge which the Stevens biography does not elaborate on. Farrier also planned a park in 1855 as part of a Stoneham subdivision for David Burnham. The small, square park was to have been north of Elm Street and was never constructed.
