As the name implies, it was constructed with eight equal sides, and it rises two stories to a low pitched roof with a central cupola. This example has a one story verandah with chamfered posts and pendant drop bracketts and a decorative cut baluster rail, extending around the entire house. It is sited on a large elevated corner lot and has main entries on both street sides. The entries are treated with full length glazed side lights and transoms.
Windows are generally located two to a side at each story except over the doors where there is one; they contain 6/6 sash. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community) The Enoch Fuller House possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials and workmanship and is significant as Stoneham's best preserved example of a mid-nineteenth century octagon. It meets criterion C of the National Register of Historic Places. Surrounded by a full porch, with a "flying" staircase in the center stairhall, this is the best detailed of three Stoneham octagons. Additionally, it has the most colorful history, having been built for Enoch Fuller, ca. 1850. Mr. Fuller was a friend of. P.T. Barnum, of the circus Barnum and Bailey. Fuller reportedly stayed in Barnum's.
Bridgeport Connecticut octagon, and was impressed with the design. Fuller's role in Stoneham history is not clear: he did not live in the house very long, and it served as a boarding house by 1858. - The owner at that time was Benjamin Goldsmith. By 1874 it was owned by G.W. Trowbridge, manufacturer of shoe tips. It appears that the Fuller Octagon, and perhaps the other two Octagons in Stoneham are built of interlocking timber construction rather than the standard stud wall: This construction technique also appears in Wakefield octagons, and is described in research published by the Essex Institute. One of Stoneham's octagons has been heavily altered and the other has been recorded as #131 in this nomination.
