Setting_ early mid 19th century resi- dential neighborhood; many buildings unfortunately are unsympathetically altered. The Charles Gill House is one of three intact Second Empire style cottages in Stoneham which exhibit numerous characteristic features of the style (see forms #262 and #330). Constructed ca. 1860, it has a side hall plan with a rear cross ell and a flat roofed, bracketted porch nestled in the corner. Typical stylistic features include a mansard roof with pedimented dormers supported on a bracketted and dentilated cornice. The three bay facade includes an original glazed entry with bracketted hood and two full length windows containing 2/2 sash.
The Gill House sits on a relatively large treed lot which contributes to its historic setting. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relatesto the development of the community.) The Charles Gill House possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, and workmanship. It is significant as good local example of a Second Empire style cottage and as the home of a local shoemaker. As a well preserved and typical representative of Stoneham's residential development during its greatest period of prosperity, the Gill House meets criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places. Charles Gill was a shoemaker, according to town directories. His mansard roofed cottage is of a type popular throughout the town in the 1860's.
Most of these cottages are well detailed, although of small scale; this is one of the best preserved and documented examples.
