Constructed c. 1875, it is identical to its neighbor, the Clara Buswell House (#31). Both have up-to-date L-shaped plans with entries and porches at the L's angle.
The open porch is supported on ornate carved posts and the entry contains double doors. The house is now clad in asbestos siding rather than clapboards, but most of the original trim, including bracketed cornice, remains as-daes the patterned slate roof. Window treatment is varied, including single and paired openings with heavy lintels, paired arched windows in the gables, and bay windows at the first story. In general, original 2/2 sash remains. The house also retains its original granite curbing and posts. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community) The Onslow Gilmore House possesses integrity of location, design and workmanship. It is signifi- cant as an excellent local example of the Italianate style, and one of the few period houses to remain on Main Street.
It meets criterion C of the National Register of Historic Places. Onslow Gilmore owned the land upon which his house was built for years prior to its construction; as a realtor and insurance man, he owned a good deal of property in the seventies and 'eighties. His finely detailed house (now somewhat altered) spoke well of a man prominent in business and financial circles. Treasurer of the Stoneham 5¢ Savings Bank, Director and Treasurer of, the E.L. Patch Company, Town Treasurer, and State Representative, he came to Stoneham in 1850 from New Hampshire. This residence is nearly identical to the adjacent house, at 481 Main Street (#31).
