acreage 8.1 acres Setting Faces south, perpendicular_to 17th-century road UTM: 19/328420/4711980 (Staple additional sheets here) ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE (describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within community) This house is a good example of Reading's vernacular version of the Georgian-Federal style. It is five bays long and two and one-half stores high, with a central chimney. Small, narrow windows reach almost to the plate. The narrow, central doorway surround is framed by fluted pilasters with high capitals. The entablature is now obscured by a late 19th- century porch, but the six-panel door remains. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community) The farm originally was established here in the early 18th century by Abraham Roberts.
It is thought that this house was built in 1787 by Timothy Hartshorn, whose family had been among the first settlers of Reading- Hartshorn was a farmer and a shoemaker, as were so many of his townsmen for the next hundred years.. A prosperous man, he bought the farm, built this house, and owned a share in the lobs Pound sawmill on the Ipswich River. Timothy W. Hartshorn, who lived here until he died in 1870, was a photographer; he owned a "daguerreotype saloon" located on the Common. This property was in Hartshorn family ownership for almost 100 yeras.
