UTM Boston North Quad 19/327020/4705000 (Staple additional sheets here) ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE (describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within community) The Lorenzo. D. Hawkins House is an outstanding local example of the Second Empire style. Constructed ca. 1870, it is a cottage with an irregular side hall plan and a complex roof line. Major features include a bracketed entry porch, bay windows with arched glazing, dormers with arched glazing and a heavily bracketed cornice. with arched glazing.
The cottage rests on a granite foundation, is covered with clapboards and is enclosed by a scalloped slate roof. It is sited on a hilly lot behind an uncoursed granite retaining wall and preserves a perjod carriage house to the rear. L HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community) The Lorenzo D. Hawkins House possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, and workmanship. It is.significant as a finely detailed examplé of a Second Empire style cottage and as the home of a local shoe manufacturer. Constructed during Stoneham's greatest period of prosperity, it meets criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places. This was the residence of Lorenzo D. Hawkins, a machinery and shoe manufacturer. He was the owner of this house from construction, ca.
1870, to 1906(and possibly beyond this date). The Hawkins house and barn are among themost finely crafted extant buildings in Stoneham. Although it is a cottage of somewhat small scale, no expense was spared in the application of wooden, glass, and slate detail. Views of Stoneham from the hilly Hawkins property are excellent. The barn is also a beautiful building. The shallow mansard roof is covered with silver scalloped shingles, and polychrome diamond insets. Both structures have been well maintained and all original materials and finishes are intact.
