Constructed ca. 1850, it is a two-story, four bay house which is sheathed in clapboards and enclosed by a pitched roof. Windows have projecting frames and contain 6/6 sash. .The entries are centered of tne facade and protected by a single open porch. Other decorative elements include paneled pilasters and a bracketed cornice.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain thé role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community) The Benjamin Hibbard House possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, and workmanship. It is significant as one of only two well preserved double workers' houses in Stoneham.. As a representative housing type from Stoneham's major period of significance, it meets criterion A of the National Register of Historic Places. The Hibbard House was constructed next to the South School (1856) during 1850's. It is representative of the variety of workers' houses found in the Summer-Pond Street area, a neighborhood of laborers and shoemakers from ca. 1820-1915. Benjamin Hibbard was a horsecar' driver during his residence here in the 1870's and 18880's; other residents are unknown.
