The gable-end, side-hall plan is from the Greek Revival idiom, as are the wide cornice and cornerboards, and the pedimented window lintels. Italianate details include the entrance doorway hood, carried on elaborate millwork brackets, and the side bay window. Dinsmore, who lived here from at least 1854 through 1889, was a cabinetmaker -- a participant in an extensive Reading industry during the 19th century. This industry suffered from the loss of Southern markets during and after the Civil War. Dinsmore had his shop behind his house in 1854. He formed a partnership with G.W. Grouard to make furniture, and later bought the planing mill built by William Badger just down Salem Street. Established in the 1840's, the mill was owned by a long succession of individuals, and at one time was known as the Eames Steam Mill. Rebuilt after a fire in the 1880's, the mill was closed in 1906 and demolished. Salem Street in the 19th century was a busy thoroughfare with much industry -- necktie making, woodworking, cabinetmaking, and organ- pipe manufacturing, to name some of the businesses located on or near the street.
Samuel Dinsmore married in 1842 a daughter of Thomas Pratt. Dinsmore was a cousin to Washington Damon of 38 Salem Street (form no. B-31), since both of their mothers were daughters of Amos Parker of 52 Salem Street (form no. B-33) . This connection with the Parker family made it possible for Dinsmore to obtain the land on which to build his house: parts of the old Parker farm were divided up for housebuilding, but the lots were conveyed chiefly to members of the Parker family.
