Constructed c. 1820-1830, it retains the five bay center entry facade of earlier houses rather than focusing on its gable end. Its later date is revealed in its height (resulting in a central window placement), its twin chimneys, and its wide frieze. A one story ell, which may have served as a shop, extends from its east side:.
The main part of the house rests on a granite foundation, and the ell on a brick foundation, but the whole is sheathed in clapboards with plain cornerboards and a molded water table. Windows are set in plain frames which contain 6/6 sash. The entry has sidelights and an extremely. narrow transom. The ell has a secondary entry with transom. The house faces south on Main Street in a densely developed, primarily nineteenth century setting near Main Street. Its contemporary neighbors are unfortunately altered by siding, etc. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community) 107 William St.possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials and workmanship.
As an exce lent example of a traditional Greek Revival cottage, reflecting Stoneham's early industrial period, it meets criterion C of the National Register of Historic Places. After the construction of the turnpike (Main Street) in 1806, residential development began to cluster near it, particularly at the northern end. This residence was adjacent to the Hay Tavern, a early landmark at the intersection of William and Central Streets. Aside from the vell conserved early nineteenth century architectural features, this house 1s signiticant tor survival near Main Street, which has experienced considerable loss of early buildings.
