Constructed c. 1850 when the Greek Revival style prevailed in Stoneham, it is a T-plan cottage with a cross- gable frontispiece and an extended rear ell. It is-sheathed in clapboards with narrow corner- boards, and enclosed by an overhanging, steep pitched root with exposed ratters. "Gothic" embellishments consist of pierced vergeboards, in the cross gable and pointed windows at the second story. First story windows have unusually heavy lintels and contain 6/6 sash. entry is enclosed by a glazed porch. The house.
faces north on Marble Street in a mixed 19th and 20th century residential neighborhood. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history and hov the building relates to the development of the community) 114 Marble Street possesses integrity of location, design, materials. and workmanship and is significant as Stoneham's only well preserved example of a Gothic Revival cottage. It meets criterion C of the National Register of Historic Places. 114 Marble Street is the best preserved Gothic cottage in Stoneham. A few residences were built in the style given impetus by A.J. Downing, but many of the original details are lost. This residence retains the pointed arch windows, shaped shutters, exposed rafters, and vergeboard decor of the original. A small front porch, primarily glazed, has been added.
