It 1s extremely simple, possessing almost no stylistic references other than the modified Greek Revival architecture of its off-center entry. It rests on a brick foundation and is sheathed in clapboards. Windows have simple surrounds and contain original 6/6 sash.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community) 19 Tremont Street possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, and workmanship. It is significant as a well preserved workers? cottage, associated with Stoneham's Irish population. It meets criterion A of the National Register of Historic Places. Tremont Street was the home of a group of Irish shoemakers, including Patrick Cogan who eventually became the proprietor of a large shoe factory. This modest residence, across the street from Cogan's(altered), has had no alteration in its exterior finishes or details. In 1894 Tremont Street, numbers 1-24, with only five exceptions, was the home of Irish shoemakers. A number of these houses remain, but they are altered and separated by later infill.
