on a large lot, facing south Recorded by Architectural Preservation Associates Organization Readina Historical Date OMASSIO ovenbe30108 Date 2/16/84 19/325860/4708890 (Staple additional sheets here) ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE (describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within community) This fanciful Queen Anne house exhibits many of the architectural conceits of the period: complexity of massing, with its turret, oriel, projecting gable, inset window, and curved wall plane; elaboration of materials and decorative elements, such as the porch spoolwork, imbricated shingles, and stained-glass windows; and an eclectic use of historical references, in the dentil embellishment of the cornice, and in the copper finial that tops the turret. A deep, encircling veranda provides a private, shaded place for outdoor living.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community) In 1889, roads in this area were "paper streets," with names that were dif- ferent from those used today. Howard Street was accepted by the town in 1893. The eastern end of the street was laid out over the old Prescott farm, whose homestead was at 284 Summer Avenue (form no. C-113). The development of the western end of the street was delayed by the still-rural nature of West Street, with its large land holdings. This area developed in response to the influx of middle-class railroad commuters who wished to settle in a suburb not too distant from their work in downtown Boston. George Heath lived on Howard Street near Summer Avenue, and was associated with the Bailey and Heath Company of Boston.
The firm was responsible for some of the development of the area, and also for some of the Scotland Road area. It is possible that Horace E. Wallace (Wallis) was the first owner of this house, since he was assessed for it in 1900, as an out-of-town property owner (from Waltham) . In. 1906, Calvin P. Atwood -- a clerk who commuted to work in Boston -- owned the house. His wife was Florence Parker, the daughter of Walter S. Parker (form no. C-90).
