Setting on a rise, facing the street behind a fieldstone retaining wall 19/326300/4710/30 (Staple additional sheets here) ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE (describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within community) This was called a "French cottage" when it was built, and that is just what it appeared to be, as interpreted by suburban America. Although the house is a full two stories high, the mansard roof gives it the appear- ance of being one and one-half stories. The house is similarly deceptive in plan; although only three bays face the street, it is actually quite roomy: due to extensions at the rear. Architectural interest comes from the fish-scale patterned slate roof; the dormers, topped with wide, octagonal hood moldings; the Italianate entry portico; and bay windows.

Set on a hill, on high brick foundations, this house still manages to look cozy and prim, with a dash of high style imported from France. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community) In the 1870's, this part of town was the scene of a great deal of real- estate activity. David C. Temple and Wendell Bancroft were builders; they built this house for immediate resale to new arrivals in Reading, or to the younger sons of established families who did not wish to emigrate north or west. In 1875, Mineral Street was known as Bancroft Street, despite the fact that there already was a Bancroft Street in another part of town. It eventually got its current name from mineral springs that Oscar Foote attempted to develop for commercial purposes.

The venture failed, and all that remained was the street name. It is believed that the 1875 map errs in depicting this house, locating it one lot too far toward High Street. Milo Allen lived here when both the 1875 and 1889 maps were drawn, but must have moved by 1900, because he was not assessed taxes that year. Allen was a clerk in Melrose.
