Date November 30, 1980 Date 2/14/84 UTM: 19132580014709180 (Staple additional sheets here) ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE (describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within community) This property illustrates the way in which builders of Greek Revival houses in Reading kept the familiar five-bay Georgian-Federal plan, but oriented it to the street, and applied classical Grecian details. These details in- clude the prominent sill, corner, and cornice boards, and the trabeated entrance with three-quarter length sidelights. The central gable is later.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community) The neighborhood store attached to this building takes its name from another structure in the area, which bore a painted dragon weathervane set up by Ephraim Weston in 1815. The vane gave the neighborhood the name of Dragon Corner, which still prevails today. The 1840 valuation book records Henry M. Pratt as owner of this property. He was the son of David Pratt, and simultaneously owned his inherited property, 217 Woburn Street (form no. C-131) until 1851, when it was sold. Henry married Maryette Stratton in 1836, but the marriage was shortlived, as she died in 1842. He married Rebecca Richardson in 1845. Apparently Pratt moved to Haverhill between 1860 and 1870. By 1875, Benjamin Peabody had established a pump factory here.
Wooden pump stocks were manufactured in several small buildings. The operation was leased by Arthur S. Richardson in 1880 and 1882. By the time of the 1889 map, Mrs. Peabody still owned the property, but G.S. Tukey's name had been added. BIBLIOGRAPHY and/or REFERENCES 1854 map - H.M. Pratt (Henry) 1875 map - B.
