Setting_ on a corner lot in a resi- dential neighborhood, facing west, toward an important street UTM: 19/32622014709400 (Staple additional sheets here) ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE (describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within community) This is an interesting house with twin cross gables that dominate the composition of the front facade. The plane of the wall advances and recedes, to create bays and shaded porches. On the sides are a Palladian window to the south, and an open, screened porch to the north, with rounded roof and arched windows. Windows are horizontally grouped, per- haps influenced by the Prairie-style houses of Frank Lloyd Wright. The first-floor windows are leaded.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community) Summer Avenue, along with its side streets, was one of the prime areas for well-to-do building in 19th-century Reading. Many of the homeowners worked in Boston, and commuted every day by train. Their wives and fam- ilies remained in Reading, enjoying the benefits of suburban life. Mr. and Mrs. George Ives lived in this house. He was a restaurant manager of Smith House in Cambridge, and of his father-in-law's Georgian Restaurant chain in Boston. His wife, like most of her middle-class peers, stayed home and managed the house. BIBLIOGRAPHY and/or REFERENCES 1889 - Ben.
