Setting 20th century residential Boston North Quad 1:25,000 UTM: 19 328640 4705000 (Stagle additional sheets here) ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE (describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within cormunity) This is one of Stoneham's best preserved traditional" Greek Revíval cottages, given an unusual twist by the front slope of its roof which extends over the cutaway facade to form a porch. Constructed c. 1840, it retains the five bay center entry form of earlier houses, but is updated by stylish motifs such as corner pilasters and its porch with wide paneled frieze and squared "Tuscan" supports. Windows contain 2/2 sash and the entry is framed by 3/4 length side lights on paneled bases.
The clapboarded house has been alteredby an asphalt roof and the removal of its north chimney. The house is sited close to Green Street facing west, and is surrounded by twentieth century residences. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community) 269 Green Street possesses integrity of location, design, materials and workmanship and is a locally important example of a Greek Revival cottage with integral front porch. It meets criteriot C of the National Register of Historic Places. This is the best preserved of a small number of unusual Greek Revival cottages whose front roofs have been extended to form full porches.
Other examples are the Silas Deane House (#197) and 69 Green Street, which was altered in the early twentieth century with new sash and large hipped roofdormers containing paired windows. It is located on one of Stoneham's early streets, but nothing is known about its owners.
