The exceeding verticality of the steeply pitched gable roof, and the cutwork of the raking eaves, are the primary allusions to the Gothic Revival style. millwork brackets, and the front bay window are characteristic of the acketa, ana the Front The double front door, its doorway hood on elaborate - Italianate style. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community) The 1889 map has this house owned by a Mrs. S.B. Nichols.

This seems to be an error, because the 1890 valuation book credits it to Elizabeth B. Nichols. Born Elizabeth Boynton Hartwell, she first married Thomas C. Day. After Day's death, she married David Henry Nichols in 1874, when he was 42 years old. It is likely that this man is the D. Henry Nichols listed in the 1901 business directory: his address is given as Parker Street opposite Village Street, and Parker Street addresses were fre- guently interchanged with Haven Street addresses. Nichols was a cord- wainer, or shoemaker. Elizabeth died in 1900, and the house was assessed that year to her heirs. Nichols remarried the widow Annie B. Rice in 1904, and the house passed to Elizabeth's daughter, Mary Eliz- abeth, who had married Bob Tottam. Thus, the 1906 map refers to "Mary E.

Tottam." A rubber worker named Michael Daily lived here in 1907, but probably he was only a tenant, since he lived elsewhere in 1909. Frank Campbell, a carpenter, owned the property in 1926.
