Jenkins House is a well preserved example of a side hall type Greek Revival cottage with an enlarged L-shaped plan formed by a full ell extending from the west elevation. Constructed c. 1860, it exhibits the major features associated with modest interpretations of the style.
It is sheathed with clapboards and ornamented with wide cornerboards treated as pilasters, a wide trieze, and a raking in 1ts gable end. The house and ell rest on a brick foundation. The entry is treated with half-length side-lights. (now filled in) and a off Main Street. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community) The Franklin B. Jenkins House possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials and workmanship. It is significant not only as a well preserved example of Stoneham's most prevalent mid-nineteenth century housing type but also for its associations with a prominent shoe manufacturer and as an illustration of the community's social development. Jenkins House meets criteria A, B, and C of the National Register of Historic Places. Franklin B.
Jenkins, partner in the firm of Jenkins and Vinton, shoe manufacturers, lived here in the 'seventies, and may have built. the house. Among his neighbors was Jason Sanborn, of Sanborn and Hill, a small shoe manufacturing concern. Mr. Jenkins moved "up the hill" in the 'nineties, as the shoe industry prospered, to a fine frame house at 35 Chestnut (#329) . (Mr. Sanborn's business partner, Sidney A. Hill, resided at 31 Chestnut, #327). Franklin Jenkins' residence is a good example of the square or L-plan Greek Revival house built at mid-century in Stoneham. This house characteristically has returns at eaves, wide pilasters at corners, and a side-hall (rather than center) entry.
