The Franklin B. Jenkins House is Stoneham's best example of the Queen Anne style exhibiting Shingle Style influences. Constructed ca.1895, it has an L-shaped plan pitched roofs, the rear of which is steep enough to enclose the second story. The entry, which is located in the front cross-section, is protected by an open verandah which wraps around to the rear section in an L shape. special treatments include a triple window on the facade, and two stained glass stair windows and a gable lunette on the side elevation.
The house is the southernmost of three fine local examples of the Queen Anne style. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE The Franklin B. Jenkins House possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials and workmanship. It is significant as Stoneham's best late example of the Queen Anne Style, as a representative ot Stoneham's suburban expansion, and for its associations with an important local shoe manufacturer. It thus meets criteria A, B, and C of the National Register of Historic Places. This was the residence of Franklin B. Jenkins, a partner in the firm of Vinton and Jenkins, a shoe manufacturing company which in 1891 was the third largest in Stoneham. Chestnut Street was not developed at this end until the mid 1880s, and several of the first residents were shoe factory presidents or partners, including Vinton's neighbor Sidney Hill of Sanborn and Hill. Ihis area, known as Mt.
Discovery, was one of Stoneham's three major attempts at platting and promoting a subdivision. As noted in the overview, none of these were particularly successful and exist today as fragments of street plans and scattered period houses. This house, and its neighbors the Newton Lamson House (#328) and the Sidney A. Hill House (#327) form a unique group of three period houses.
