Residential setting of mixed Boston North Quad 1:25,000 UTM: 19 327120 4704520 (Stanle additional sheets here) ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE (describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within conmunity) The John Jones House is Stoneham's best preserved example of à traditional form Italianate house with a three bay facade consisting of a center entry flanked by bay windows. Constructed in 1874, it is a two story structure with a pitched roof and twin interior chimneys. It is sheathed in clapboards with narrow corner boards and frieze and a raking cornice. Windows are set in simple trames and contain 2/2 sash.
The entry is protected by a porch with a decorative rail which connects the two bay windows. The house taces south on Winthrop street at the intersection of Wright and Warren in a quiet, latter nineteenth century setting. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community) The John Jones House possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, and workmanship. It is significant as an excellent local example of the traditional Italianate style with known associations with a local shoe manufacturer. It meéts criterion.C of the National Register of Historic Places. John Jones, the first owner of this house, was a shoeman. This gable-roofed, tripartite bay-front house type is seen throughout Stoneham in several versions, and this is the best preserved.
