The Walter Keene House is a good local example of the transitional Queen Anne/ Colonial Revival style. Constructed ca. 1890, its Colonial Revival features include rectangular plan, hipped roof, entry porch with balustrade, and a modified Palladian window. Enlivening Queen Anne features include the combination shingle/clapboard surface and a corner tower with one-story porch.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community.) The Walter Keene House possesses integrity of location, design, setting,materials, and workmanship. It is significant as a good local example of the Queen Anne/Colonial Revival style and for its associations with a prominent businessman and real estate developer. Thus, the house meets criteria A, B and C of the National Register of Historic Places. Walter S. Keene, after whom Keene Street is named, was a salesman for the F. Shaw and Brothers leather company in Boston. He was born in Palmyra, Maine in 1858 and moved in Stoneham in 1882 with his wife and children. An incorporator of the Stoneham Natioanl and Stoneham Co-operative Banks, he erected this fine house overlooking the city on the slope of Farm Hill.
This residence shows the type of suburban expansion which occurred in the 1880s and 1890s. Self-conscious, fashionable residences were erected along wide streets lined with trees such as High Street. Walter Keene was the developer of the area including Keene Street and High Street north of Cowdrey. Unlike "suburban" style subdividers of his day, he did not divide the land into irregularly sized lots with winding street, nor did he give the small subdivision a picturesque name.
