The rectangular shape broken by a cross gable has 3 openings on the first floor -- a double sliding door is flanked by doors with shouldered architraves. Pilasters support the bracketed central gable pavil ion, which is flush-boarded. Above the hayloft is a scrolled molding. Two semicircular windows flank the hayloft. A copper weathervane adorns the roof.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community) Robert ("Father") Kemp came to Reading in 1853 after his partner in a boot and shoe business in Boston, John Mansfield, bought on Summer Avenue, then sold half of it to Kemp. He planned to raise apples and chickens, while continuing to commute to town on the 8-year-old railroad line. This barn was probably for the horse and carriage, rather than farm produce.
