The Newton Lamson House is one of Stoneham's best detailed examples of the Queen Anne/ Stick Style. Constructed ca.1887, it is a rectangular plan house with a cross gable on its south side. Stylistic features include punched vergeboards, decorative shingling in the gables, an applied scalloped edge valance beneath the eaves, a jerkin headed front gable and a front/side porch supported on turned balusters. Windows contain 6/1 sash, and the entry is located at the southeast corner.
The house is enhanced by its central position, in a group of three from the period, on the west side of Chestnut Street. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community.) The Newton Lamson House possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, and workmanship. It is significant as one of only a few well detailed examples of the Queen Anne/Stick Style in Stoneham and for its central position in a group of three period houses in one of Stoneham's largest late 19th century suburban subdivisions. As a representative of Stoneham's suburban expansion it meets criteria A and C of the National Registeroof Historic Places. The Newton Lamson House was constructed ca.1887 in an area known as Mt.
Discovery, which became one of Stoneham's three major attempts at platting and promoting a suburban subdivision. As noted in the overview, none of these subdivisions were fully realized, and exist today as fragments of street plans and scattered period houses. The western side of Chestnut Street developed in the late 1880s and 1890s after lots were sold from the estate of town surveyor Amasa Farrier. The Newton Lamson House along with the Franklin B. Jenkins House (#32a) and the Sidney A. Hill House (#327) represent a unique group of three period houses.
