Boston North Quad 1:25,00 UTM: 19 328229 4705360 ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE (describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within conmunity) The Locke-Baldwin-Kinsley House is one of Stoneham's few well-preserved eighteenth century houses and the only one with an ell known to have been used as a shop in the nineteenth century. Con- structed c. 1744, it is a slightly asymmetrical five bay.center entry house which rises two storie to a pitched roof. .The roof, now covered with asphalt, is pierced bytwin rear wall chimneys.
As this chimney placement is usually associated with the Federal period, it may be the result of an early nineteenth century remodeling. A one story ell extends sideways from the south elevation The house rests on a granite foundation and is sheathed with shingles which replaced clapboards in the twentieth century. Windows contain 6/6 sash and have simple architraves as does the door. The house faces west on Green Street in a residential setting.of mixed date. A c.1900 photograph shows_the house with current window and chimney placement and its side ell as well as an added rear lean-to. It is also shown with clapboards, cornerboards and projecting entry lintel, all now HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history removed.
and how the building relates to the development of the community) The Locke-Baldwin-Kinsley House possesses integrity of location, design, setting and workmanship; it is significant both for its early design and for its associations with nineteenth century industry. The house meets criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places. 45 Green Street was first owned by the Locke family, whose property holdings extended to Bow Street and beyond. It was purchased in 1867 by Micah B. Baldwin. Micah was a saddler and harnessmaker, and returned to Stoneham after the Civil War to set up business. The shop ell on the south end of the house was probably used by former occupants as a shoe shop, and Micah used it as a harness shop. Micah and his wife had three children. Charles, father of Mrs. Helen Kinsley, the current owner, inherited the property of his father in 1911.
